A single-car crash has caused the M4 westbound in Wiltshire to be shut between junction 16 (Swindon) and junction 17 (Chippenham). Emergency crews, including Wiltshire Police and National Highways Traffic Officers, responded promptly after the vehicle left the carriageway, resulting in significant disruption.

Drivers are facing long delays and are strongly advised to plan alternate routes to avoid the affected section of the motorway. Diversions have been established to help keep traffic moving and steer vehicles clear of the crash site.

For vehicles over 14 feet 3 inches in height, the diversion route is to exit at junction 16, proceed along the A3102 towards Calne, then take the A4 westbound to the A350 Chequers Roundabout, and rejoin the M4 at junction 17. Motorists should follow the solid diamond diversion signs.

For vehicles under 14 feet 3 inches, the recommended diversion is to exit at junction 16, follow the A3102 towards Royal Wootton Bassett, then take the B4042 through Malmesbury before rejoining the M4 at junction 17.

Motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time or delay journeys if possible. For the latest traffic updates, drivers can visit the National Highways website or contact their 24/7 call centre on 0300 123 5000.

This closure serves as a reminder to stay alert and drive carefully, particularly during adverse weather conditions or rush hour periods. Drivers are urged to keep their wits about them on the roads to ensure safety.
