UK Navy Crew Member Vanishes Off Ireland’s Wild Northwest Coast
Distress Call Sparks All-Out Hunt
A frantic search is underway after a UK naval crew member mysteriously disappeared overnight off Ireland’s northwest coast. The crew member was last seen around 10.30pm Friday on a UK naval support vessel. The alarm was raised just before 9am Saturday when the Irish Coast Guard received a distress call from the ship.
Massive Multi-Agency Search in Full Swing
Irish and UK agencies are pulling out all the stops in a desperate bid to find the missing sailor. The Irish Coast Guard’s Marine Rescue Coordination Centre at Malin Head is leading the charge between Tory Island, Co Donegal, and Eagle Island, Co Mayo.
- Air support features Rescue 120F fixed-wing plane from Shannon, Rescue 118 helicopter from Sligo, and the Irish Air Corps CASA 284 plane.
- At sea, three RNLI all-weather lifeboats from Ballyglass, Arranmore Island, and Lough Swilly are combing the treacherous waters.
- Additional vessels have joined the frantic search effort.
Vessel Located North of Tory Island
The missing crew member vanished from the UK naval support ship positioned north of Tory Island. An Irish Coast Guard spokesperson said, “Malin Head Coast Guard are coordinating a search for the missing crew member in the sea off the northwest coast between Tory Island, Co Donegal and Eagle Island, Co Mayo.” The disappearance has sent shockwaves through navy ranks and sparked a race against time to bring the sailor home safe.
