A man, aged 34, was arrested in central London after a dramatic police pursuit ended with an overturned police car and several injuries on Wednesday afternoon.
The chase began at approximately 3.45pm when the driver failed to stop for City of London Police officers on Farringdon Street. Two unmarked police vehicles initiated an authorised Tactical Pursuit and Containment (TPAC) manoeuvre.
During the pursuit, the suspect’s vehicle deliberately rammed police cars. This aggressive driving caused one of the police vehicles to overturn on Stamford Street in Waterloo. The suspect also mounted the pavement, creating a serious danger to members of the public.
Specialist tactical drivers intervened to bring the pursuit to a safe conclusion. The driver was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failure to stop, driving without insurance, criminal damage, and drug driving. He remains in police custody.
Two police officers involved in the incident were taken to hospital as a precaution but did not sustain serious injuries. Additionally, a tuk-tuk driver suffered minor injuries and was hospitalised. A witness at the scene experienced chest pains and received treatment on site.
Road closures were put in place as emergency services secured the area and carried out investigations. City of London Police continue to investigate the dangerous pursuit.
Chief Inspector James Minney stated: “The specialist tactical drivers’ actions prevented further harm to the public during this high-risk pursuit.”
