Over 200 Firefighters Take on Massive Chobham Common Blaze
More than 200 firefighters are battling a huge blaze on Chobham Common after Surrey Fire and Rescue were called out just after midday on Friday. The fire has already ravaged around 140 acres of heath and scrubland.
Huge Firefighting Effort Underway
At the fire’s height, over 40 vehicles including fire engines, specialist units, and 4x4s were deployed. Emergency crews and partners remain on-site, working round the clock to contain the blaze and start the dampening process.
Evacuations and Road Closures Hit the Area
Safety concerns forced the evacuation of several properties nearby. Residents are still not allowed back home as local roads remain shut. Authorities are urging the public to steer clear of the area for their own safety.
Extreme Heat Blamed as Cause Remains Under Investigation
While the exact cause is still unknown, officials say the scorching temperatures across Surrey likely fuelled the fire. Fire chiefs warn people to avoid lighting bonfires or using disposable BBQs in the countryside to prevent more outbreaks.
Police Back Up Emergency Efforts
Surrey Police have thrown their weight behind the operation with officers, Special Constables, and support staff managing evacuations and road closures. They thank locals for their ongoing support and patience.
“We’re asking residents to avoid starting unnecessary fires including lighting bonfires, or using disposable BBQs in our countryside to prevent any more fires of this nature,” officials warned.
