Police Chase Ends in Smash at Berwick Station – Roads and Trains Grounded
Chaos erupted near Berwick railway station today, 16 May 2024, after a high-speed police chase ended in a dramatic crash. Just after 11:30 AM, a blue Alfa Romeo Stelvio V6 slammed into the level crossing barriers, shutting down roads on both sides of the station and grinding the rail line between Lewes and Eastbourne to a halt.
High-Speed Pursuit Ends in Collision
The driver, pursued northbound by police unit 123, ignored orders to stop and fled the scene after crashing into the barriers. Network Rail quickly moved in to clear debris and repair damaged equipment, but disruption lasted for hours.
Abandoned Alfa Romeo Found 10 Miles Away
Later in the day, officers discovered the deserted Alfa Romeo in the village of Horam, about 10 miles from the crash site. The suspect remains at large as police ramp up their search, urging the public to come forward with any information.
