Emma Beck, a 47-year-old Reform UK councillor elected to St Helens Council’s Thatto Heath ward, was convicted of assault by beating following an incident last year in Merseyside. The conviction occurred after Beck pushed a woman in her 60s to the floor outside a bar in St Helens.

The conviction became public months after the local elections, prompting concerns about the vetting process for candidates and the impact on public trust.

On 6 April 2023, Merseyside Police responded to reports of a woman being pushed outside Perry’s Bar on Duke Street. At the time, Beck was working as a bouncer and was charged after a voluntary police interview. Although she denied the charges, South Sefton Magistrates’ Court found her guilty on 15 January 2024. She was fined £180 and ordered to pay £100 in compensation to the victim.

Beck did not disclose the assault conviction during her election campaign. She had campaigned on issues related to tackling anti-social behaviour and improving public safety in Thatto Heath. Reform UK has confirmed that Beck has appealed the conviction and is awaiting the outcome before making further comments.

The Security Industry Association (SIA), which licenses door supervisors, has launched an investigation into Beck’s case. License holders are required to report any convictions within two days, and failure to do so may breach licensing conditions.

The St Helens Labour Party expressed serious concerns about Reform UK’s candidate vetting procedures, describing the situation as “deeply concerning.” A spokesperson emphasised that councillor roles demand integrity and that political parties must ensure candidates are suitable to serve their communities responsibly.

Emma Beck is the third newly elected Reform UK councillor in Merseyside to face scrutiny. Jay Cooper resigned following controversial social media posts, while Stephen Mousdell stepped down, triggering a by-election after adult content posts surfaced online. Nigel Farage acknowledged shortcomings in the vetting process, noting that some candidates manage to slip through due to withheld information.
