Sweltering Chaos: 1,800 Passengers Evacuate Stranded Trains Near Loughborough Junction
More than 1,800 passengers were left baking onboard as a major fault brought all train lines near Loughborough Junction to a standstill earlier today. The breakdown struck just before 11am on a southbound Thameslink service between London Blackfriars and Herne Hill, leaving commuters trapped in scorching 33°C heat with no air conditioning.
Stranded Commuters Forced to Walk Tracks Under Blazing Sun
As the train ground to a halt, desperate passengers flooded social media with footage showing them walking along sun-drenched tracks to reach the next platform. One commuter, Michael Elston, described the chaotic scene on X (formerly Twitter):
“Train broke down and have been stuck on the train since, with no A/C may I add. We’re now all having to evacuate the train and walk down the tracks to the next platform as the train can’t move.”
Emergency Teams Race to Evacuate in Scorching Conditions
A swift joint operation involving Govia Thameslink Railway, Network Rail, the British Transport Police, and the London Fire Brigade was launched to tackle the crisis.
“We pulled all resources from across Sussex and Kent to get personnel on site to safely evacuate passengers as quickly as possible,” said a joint statement from GTR and Network Rail.
The London Fire Brigade deployed 25 firefighters who, alongside BTP and railway staff, escorted passengers along the tracks once power was cut.
Network-Wide Rail Mayhem and Travel Warnings
- All train lines between London Blackfriars and Herne Hill were blocked.
- Severe disruption hit services from London St Pancras International to Sevenoaks.
- Passengers faced delays of up to 90 minutes and multiple cancellations on Thameslink and Southeastern routes.
- Commuters advised to use Southern services from London Victoria as alternatives.
Safety Is Paramount Amid Chaos
Despite the turmoil, rail operators stressed passenger safety was their main focus.
“The safest place was to remain on the trains while we worked our hardest to get help to those on board,” the operator said.
Network Rail engineers are investigating the cause of the fault. Meanwhile, delayed passengers may be entitled to compensation for delays over 15 minutes. More info is on the Thameslink Railway website.
