Storm Antoni Set to Batter UK This Saturday
The Met Office has officially named the incoming low-pressure system Storm Antoni, warning of fierce winds and heavy rain this Saturday. Weather alerts are already active as the UK braces for a battering.
Northern Ireland and Wales in the Firing Line
Northern Ireland will take the brunt first, with rain warnings kicking in early Saturday morning. Meanwhile, southern and western Wales, along with England’s southwest and southern coasts, face strong wind warnings.
Heavy Rain and Gale-Force Winds Expected
Met Office Chief Meteorologist Steve Willington said,
“Storm Antoni will bring disruptive weather Saturday, moving west to east. Northern Ireland could see 40-60mm of rain, with 20-30mm common elsewhere. Even areas not under warning can expect very wet conditions, especially north Wales and northern England.”
Powerful gusts over 60mph are expected across southwest England and Wales, particularly on exposed coasts and high ground. High tides coinciding with these winds may worsen coastal challenges.
Transport Chaos and Safety Warnings Issued
The storm’s potential to disrupt transport and cause power outages is why it earned its name. RAC’s Rod Dennis warned,
“Saturday looks set to be the summer’s most chaotic day on the roads, especially in southwest England. With strong winds and heavy rain, it’s best to slow down and avoid coastal and moorland routes until the storm passes. Drivers towing caravans or carrying rooftop loads should exercise extreme caution.”
Malcolm Bell, Executive Chair of Visit Cornwall, urged campers to check with campsite operators for guidance on dealing with the gale-force winds.
First Named Storm of the Season
Storm Antoni is the first to be officially named by the Met Office this season, following the earlier international storms Otto and Noa.
