Arrowe Park Hospital Declares Critical Incident Over Sterile Instrument Shortage
Arrowe Park Hospital in Merseyside has hit the panic button, declaring a critical incident and halting all elective surgeries. The culprit? A dire shortage of sterile surgical instruments that has brought routine ops to a standstill.
Elective Operations Suspended as Crisis Unfolds
Last week, Arrowe Park, part of the Wirral University Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, was forced to pause all elective procedures. A serious problem in their Sterile Services Department means they simply don’t have enough safe, sterile equipment to carry out surgeries.
The trust is scrambling to buy new instruments and has called on neighbouring hospitals — including Aintree and the Countess of Chester — to loan equipment and take on diverted patients to ease the mounting pressure.
Trust Pledges Patient Safety Amid Growing Chaos
In a message to staff, the trust stressed: “Patient safety is always our top priority and we took the difficult decision to pause elective activity last week while the issue was being looked into.”
They added: “Yesterday afternoon, a critical incident was declared at the trust and we have command and control structures in place to manage this incident.”
A spokesperson told reporters: “Due to an issue in our Sterile Services Department affecting surgical instruments which unfortunately has not been resolved, the Trust has taken the decision to declare a Critical Incident. We have robust plans in place and are seeking support from other trusts to minimise patient impact at this time.”
Patients Left Anxious as Surgery Delays Mount
Waiting patients are growing anxious as delays stretch longer. The hospital is rushing in extra surgical instruments and teaming up with regional NHS partners to secure more supplies.
For now, the crisis continues and Arrowe Park fights to get its surgery schedule back on track.
