The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has decided not to open a formal investigation into a vehicle stop carried out by Metropolitan Police officers in the W2 area.
Instead, the IOPC has referred the complaint back to the Metropolitan Police’s Directorate of Professional Standards for further inquiry. The complainant has been informed of this decision.
The incident occurred early on Sunday, 14 August, when armed officers were patrolling in a marked vehicle at around 4am. They noticed a car travelling on the A40 Westway and suspected the driver was texting while driving.
The officers signalled for the vehicle to pull over, but it did not stop immediately. Additional police support was requested, and the driver eventually stopped the car five minutes later on Orsett Terrace, W2. The officers explained the reason for the stop, after which the vehicle was allowed to continue on its way.
Social media clips showing part of the stop have attracted public interest. In response to concerns raised, the police recorded the incident as a formal complaint and voluntarily referred it to the IOPC. Following their review, the IOPC decided to return the complaint to the Metropolitan Police for further investigation.
