Speeding Driver Jailed for Fatal Crash That Killed Two Boys

Jack Hart, 32, from Anlaby Road, Hull, was sentenced at Hull Crown Court today. He admitted guilt just days before his trial started, ending a long legal battle.

Hart was handed nine years in prison and banned from driving for 13 years. The sentence follows the heartbreaking deaths of two young boys.

Tragic Crash on Hull’s Anlaby Road

The fatal collision happened on 19 October 2020 at around 6:10pm. Hart was speeding in a blue BMW, hitting 57 mph in a 30 mph zone along Anlaby Road’s bus lane during rush hour. He dangerously overtook several vehicles before striking 10-year-old Stephen Duffield and 11-year-old Mason Deakin, both on bikes.

Both boys were rushed to hospital. Stephen died that same evening, and Mason succumbed two weeks later on 2 November.

Investigation Uncovers Reckless Driving and Lack of Remorse

Senior investigator Sergeant Rob Mazingham said: “Jack Hart showed a reckless disregard for the safety of others, driving through rush-hour traffic at grossly excessive speed, ignoring bus lane rules. His actions caused this inevitable collision and tragically cost two young lives.”

“After the crash, Hart removed his dash camera, which was never recovered. His complete lack of remorse throughout the investigation has been shocking.”

Families Speak Out After Sentence

The families of Stephen and Mason shared their grief and message:

“Losing our boys is a pain we will never fully recover from. While Hart’s dangerous driving took them from us, we hope raising awareness about road safety can prevent other families from suffering like we have.”

Stephen’s parent added: “Our world stopped on 19 October 2020. Stephen was just 10, about to start high school. He should have been out on his bike, watching Liverpool FC, and making memories. Instead, his life was stolen.”

“Hart’s attitude during the investigation was selfish and cruel. For 27 months, he offered no remorse and prolonged our heartbreak. Changing his plea at the last minute with no explanation only added to our pain.”

“We are thankful Hart is behind bars but nothing can bring back our boys. We thank Humberside Police for their immense efforts to get justice.”
