Deadliest US Mass Shooting of 2023: 22 Dead, Dozens Hurt in Maine Rampage
Tragedy rocked Maine on Wednesday night as two brutal shootings at Schemengees Bar and Grille and Sparetime Recreation bowling alley left at least 22 dead and 50-60 injured. It’s the deadliest mass shooting in the US this year.
Suspect on the Run: Army Reserves Gun Instructor at Large
Authorities have identified the gunman as 40-year-old Robert Card, a firearms instructor and US Army Reserves member. Police released CCTV footage showing Card armed with a rifle inside the bowling alley. Residents are urged to stay indoors – the suspect is considered “armed and dangerous.”
Mind on the Edge: Suspect’s Troubling Mental Health History
Card had recently been admitted to a mental health facility after reporting hearing voices. Despite this, he was still able to carry out the deadly attacks, raising serious questions about mental health safeguards.
Massive Manhunt Underway as Suspect Flees
The search is spreading beyond Lewiston after a vehicle linked to Card was found in nearby Lisbon, Maine. Lisbon residents have been told to shelter in place as police ramp up their hunt. New Hampshire State Police are helping the chase, using a helicopter to track down the suspect.
The Central Maine Medical Center called the shootings a “mass casualty, mass shooter event,” underlining the chilling scale of the carnage.
