More than 100 armed police officers have reportedly handed in their firearms accreditation in protest after a Metropolitan Police firearms officer was charged with murder over the shooting of Chris Kaba.

Chris Kaba, aged 24, was shot dead last year in Streatham Hill while unarmed. The officer, identified only as Officer NX121, appeared in court last Thursday charged with murder in connection with the fatal shooting.

The incident sparked widespread public outcry, including criticism from rapper Stormzy, and prompted an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

In response to the backlash from police officers, Home Secretary Suella Braverman expressed her full support for armed officers. She said, “We depend on our brave firearms officers to protect us from the most dangerous and violent in society. In the interest of public safety, they have to make split-second decisions under extraordinary pressure.”

Braverman added, “They mustn’t fear ending up in the dock for carrying out their duties. Officers risking their lives to keep us safe have my full backing, and I will do everything in my power to support them.”

The Metropolitan Police acknowledged the concerns of its officers, confirming that the number stepping back from armed duties has grown significantly over the past 48 hours.

To address the gaps created by the stand down, police forces from neighbouring areas have been brought in to patrol London. The Met is also reviewing contingency plans to maintain public safety.

Additionally, the Home Secretary has launched a review aimed at restoring confidence among armed officers so they can perform their duties without fear.

Officer NX121 appeared last Thursday at Westminster Magistrates’ Court and the Old Bailey as the legal process continues. The case has heightened tensions around armed policing in London, with the fallout ongoing.
