Man Jailed After Teen Dies Five Years After Brutal Stabbing
Tyrese Osei-Kofi, 25, from Dulwich, has been handed a minimum of seven years and ten months for the murder of 17-year-old Jamel Boyce. The sentencing came at the Old Bailey on Friday, 6 December, following a brutal assault in 2016 that left Jamel critically injured and trapped in a minimally conscious state for over five years before his death.
The 2016 Stabbing Horror
On 14 October 2016, police rushed to Triangle Place, SW4, after reports of a stabbing. They found Jamel with serious wounds to his chest and leg. Despite efforts by the London Ambulance Service, he went into cardiac arrest en route to the hospital. A heart injury starved his brain of oxygen for 14 minutes, leaving him alive but barely conscious.
Jamel was moved to specialist care where he needed constant nursing for five-and-a-half years.
Conviction, Sentence & Reopened Case
- Osei-Kofi surrendered to police on 20 October 2016 after his father identified him from appeals.
- Initially convicted of grievous bodily harm but not attempted murder, he was sentenced to 10 years in May 2018.
- After Jamel died on 13 February 2022, a post-mortem confirmed the fatal injury was from the 2016 stabbing.
- The case was reopened and Osei-Kofi charged with murder, leading to his recent sentencing.
Family Pleads for Remorse
“I wish to hear he is sorry and ask for forgiveness from us,” said Jamel’s father, Patrick in court. “No sentence can justify what he has done to me and my family, but I hope in time he can find remorse.”
Jamel’s mother, Pansy, added: “This stabbing turned an ordinary day in 2016 into a nightmare we lived through for five-and-a-half years. Jamel fought tirelessly before closing his eyes for the last time.”
“The impact of Jamel’s death has ripped through our family and community in ways words cannot capture.”
Police Speak Out on Knife Crime
Detective Inspector Andy Griffin from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command said:
“Jamel was a young man with a very promising future, known as ‘Smiley’ to his friends. The ordeal for his family has been devastating. I hope today’s sentence brings closure to their nightmare.”
The Metropolitan Police reiterated their hard stance on knife crime under the A New Met for London initiative. They stressed ongoing efforts in prevention and community diversion to cut violent crime.
