Firefighters from East and West Sussex were called to a block of flats on The Drive in Hove following reports of a loud explosion shortly before 7:45pm. The blast caused power cuts, plunging the surrounding streets into darkness.

The explosion is believed to have started in the basement electrical intake room. Emergency crews acted quickly to contain the fire and stop it from spreading further throughout the building.

One person was injured in the incident and received care from the South East Coast Ambulance Service. An East Sussex Fire spokesperson stated: “We were called to reports of a domestic dwelling fire on The Drive, Hove at 19:44. Seven Pumps, one Ariel Ladder Platform and five Officers were in attendance. Crews used two breathing apparatus, firefighting foam and one hose reel jet to extinguish the fire. The cause of the fire was accidental. One casualty was reported.”

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the explosion and fire. Residents are advised to stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
