PC Slapped with Assault Charge After South East London Arrest A Metropolitan Police officer is facing assault charges following a controversial incident in Bermondsey, South East London. PC Ben Hanscombe, based at Peckham police station, is accused of using excessive force during the detention of a man in May 2024. Independent Inquiry Led to Charges The case was handed over to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) in June 2024. After a detailed probe, the IOPC passed a full evidence file to the Crown Prosecution Service, which approved charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm against PC Hanscombe. Next Stop: Westminster Magistrates’ Court The 26-year-old officer is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on September 15, 2024, to face the assault allegations. The case has raised fresh questions about police conduct in London’s toughest boroughs.
