The iconic Groucho Club in Soho, known as a magnet for A-list celebrities and creatives, has been shut down after an immediate licence suspension was imposed. Westminster City Council took action following a link made by the Metropolitan Police between the venue and a recent serious criminal offence.

A notice now hangs on the club’s Dean Street entrance, stating that the Groucho Club “failed to uphold the prevention of crime and disorder licensing objective.” This decision forces the closure of the famous venue while an investigation is ongoing.

Since its establishment in the 1980s, the Groucho Club has been a creative hotspot for stars such as Kate Moss, George Michael, Bill Clinton, and Lily Allen. The club has hosted numerous celebrity events, including Bob Geldof’s stag do and occasions where Damien Hirst famously spent £20,000 of Turner Prize money at the bar. Once considered a stylish alternative to traditional private clubs, the Groucho is now at the centre of a police investigation, casting uncertainty over its nearly 40-year legacy as a key Soho social venue.

The club’s management is cooperating fully with authorities. A spokesperson for the Groucho Club said: “We’ve received a licence review application and take it seriously. By agreement with Westminster City Council, the club’s licence is suspended and we’ve decided to close pending a full hearing before Christmas.” The licence suspension may last up to 28 days while the council’s licensing committee privately determines the club’s future. Details remain confidential due to the ongoing investigation.

The closure has sent shockwaves through London’s creative and celebrity communities, many of whom regard the Groucho as a Soho institution. However, some insiders have noted that the club has “lost its unique feel” after expanding membership to include more corporate members in recent years. A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police added: “The investigation into the reported crime is ongoing. Further details will be released when possible.”

The future of the Groucho Club remains uncertain as police continue their inquiry and the licensing review approaches. Fans and regular patrons are closely monitoring developments in this unfolding situation.
