Nick Adderley, the suspended chief constable of Northamptonshire, is now facing a new fraud probe connected to his previous role at Staffordshire Police. Adderley served as assistant chief constable in Staffordshire from 2015 to 2018, and the current investigation focuses on alleged fraud involving police vehicle maintenance during that period.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has formally issued misconduct papers against Adderley and another former Staffordshire officer as of February 20. This development precedes Adderley’s scheduled misconduct hearing in Northamptonshire, set for May, where he faces charges related to breaches of honesty and integrity. Both officers remain suspended while the criminal investigation continues under the IOPC’s direction. Staffordshire Police have declined to comment due to the ongoing nature of the inquiry.
The controversy surrounding Adderley initially arose in October when he was suspended after it was revealed he wore Falklands War medals at a national police awards event that he was not entitled to. Police and Crime Commissioner Stephen Mold referred the matter to the IOPC after uncovering inconsistencies in Adderley’s claims about his military and naval career.
Adderley has maintained that he achieved the rank of commander and served in the navy from 1981 to 1992. However, official records do not support these assertions. Reports indicate that during the time Adderley claimed to be in naval service, he was actually operating a pub in the Wirral.
Adderley’s misconduct hearing, which was originally scheduled for the previous week, has been postponed until the end of May due to time constraints. Although he retired from Northamptonshire Police in 2022, he was rehired by Commissioner Mold and continues to receive his salary while the investigation is ongoing. Efforts to obtain a statement from Adderley have so far been unsuccessful.
