A 55-year-old man was brutally assaulted in Burgess Park in the early hours of Saturday, 14 May. The victim was walking with two friends when an unknown attacker hurled homophobic abuse before striking him over the head.
The assault occurred at 1:40am BST. Emergency services quickly responded, and the victim was taken to hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.
Police are now hunting a young male suspect seen on CCTV fleeing the scene along Albany Road. The man appears to be in his early 20s, wearing a stud earring and carrying a JD Sports plastic string bag. Although his face is obscured, officers hope someone will recognise him.
Commander Dr Alison Heydari, Frontline Policing, said: “Tackling violent crime is the Met’s top priority, and this sort of violence, especially when driven by homophobia, will not be tolerated. Our Central South BCU team is working fast and thoroughly to catch the attacker. We are committed to bringing this individual to justice.”
Anyone with information or who recognises the suspect should contact police on 101 quoting CAD 650/14may, or call Crimestoppers to remain anonymous.
