Contactless Ticketing Hits 47 South East Stations!
Train travel is about to get a whole lot easier across the South East. From February 2, 2025, contactless tap-in tap-out ticketing will be rolled out at 47 more stations, saving passengers time and money with automatic best fare guarantees.
Why Passengers Will Love It
- Hassle-Free Travel: No need for paper tickets or online booking. Just tap your card or phone and go.
- Best Fare Promise: Travelers automatically get charged the cheapest ticket available for the day.
- More Stations, More Convenience: The upgrade extends from 6 Chiltern stations to include key commuter hubs like Sevenoaks, Southend Central, and Windsor & Eton Riverside.
What’s Next? Even More Stations to Join In
Later in 2025, another 49 stations will jump on the contactless bandwagon, including London Stansted Airport — making it the first time all London airports will be connected via contactless rail travel. Big hubs like Baldock, Hitchin, Stevenage, and Letchworth Garden City are also in the queue.
Top Brass Back the Move
Transport Minister Lord Peter Hendy declared: “We are transforming the way people travel by modernising our railways, ensuring better value for money, and making journeys stress-free with guaranteed best fares. This is just one step in delivering the biggest overhaul of our rail system in a generation.”
Rail Delivery Group CEO Jacqueline Starr added: “Pay-as-you-go technology is a game-changer for passengers, offering convenience, flexibility, and simplicity. This expansion is part of our commitment to enhancing customer experiences and driving the long-term growth of rail travel.”
Proof It Works: Early Success Stories
Since its launch at six stations including High Wycombe and Beaconsfield, the system has recorded over 268,000 contactless entries and exits in just six months. Alex Williams from Transport for London praised the scheme, saying:
“Pay-as-you-go has revolutionised travel in London, and extending it to more stations ensures even greater convenience for passengers travelling into and out of the capital.”
