360-Degree CCTV Targets Illegal Car Meets in Netherfield
A state-of-the-art 360-degree camera has been installed near the new Sainsbury’s off Colwick Loop Road to clamp down on illegal car gatherings. Funded by the Safer Streets project, it aims to tackle noise, dangerous driving, and antisocial behaviour plaguing local residents and businesses.
Safer Streets Scheme Pumps £3m Into Nottinghamshire Safety
The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Nottinghamshire secured a £3 million boost from the Home Office this summer. The cash funds multiple initiatives across the county to fight neighbourhood crime, antisocial behaviour, and violence against women and girls.
A slice of the funding is dedicated to Netherfield and Colwick, with Nottinghamshire Police and Gedling Borough Council working alongside the Commissioner’s office on measures to protect public spaces.
Police Say New Tech Will Crack Down on Car Cruisers
“The police and council respond well to these dynamic incidents to disperse them, but this new camera gives an extra tool to identify those responsible and take action,” said Police and Crime Commissioner Caroline Henry.
“I hope it will also act as a deterrent that will allow local people to feel safer.”
Complaints have flooded in about loud engines, screeching tyres, and reckless driving from car enthusiasts holding unauthorised car meets.
In addition to the 360-degree camera, five automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras have been set up to instantly alert police to vehicles connected to traffic offences or criminal activity.
Tougher Measures: Wardens, Radio Links & PSPO Incoming
- Gedling Borough Council now employs Safer Streets wardens to patrol retail parks and residential zones.
- Ashopwatch radio scheme lets Victoria Retail Park businesses quickly warn police and each other about shoplifters or troublemakers.
- Plans are underway for a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) banning car cruisers from gathering, giving police power to issue hefty fines.
Inspector Mark Stanley said: “We seized an Audi S3, handed out Section 59 warnings, and issued traffic offence reports during recent operations. We’re sending letters to vehicle owners warning them of increased policing.”
“Officers will keep patrolling hotspots, engaging drivers and enforcing the law against antisocial behaviour.”
“Anyone with info on illegal bike use should call 101 or report anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
Gedling Council leader John Clarke MBE added: “This CCTV will slash antisocial behaviour from unauthorised car meets. Our PSPO will stop these events for good.”
“The Safer Streets funding couldn’t have come at a better time. Local residents should see a big drop in the problems they’ve had to deal with.”
