Big Changes for Farmers as 123 (ES) Agreements Open Today!
Basic Payment Scheme Payments Shift Earlier
The 123 (ES) agreements officially opened today, Tuesday 14 March. Farmers take note: the Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) is shaking up its payment schedule. After trialling advance payments in summer last year, the government will now roll out around 50% of your BPS funds from the start of August 2023. The remaining balance will follow from December.
Direct Payments Phased Out by 2027
Direct Payments under BPS are on their way out, with a full phase-out planned by 2027. In their place, the government is introducing the new 123 scheme — tapping into the beefed-up Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) and Countryside Stewardship programmes. Expect higher payment rates, extra management support worth up to £1,000, and a focus on helping farmers cover rising costs.
More Support, More Options for Farmers
There’s something for every farmer in these schemes. This summer, six additional SFI standards will be available for applications. Next year promises even more actions to boost both the Sustainable Farming Incentive and Countryside Stewardship schemes — giving farmers more tools to succeed.
