The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched a full investigation following a tragic multi-vehicle collision on the M25 near Hertfordshire. The incident occurred between junctions 21A and 22, causing a complete closure of a five-mile stretch of the busy motorway.
A Hertfordshire Police spokesman confirmed that the M25 remains closed between junctions 22 (London Colney) and 21A (North Orbital Road/St Albans) after the crash, which happened early this morning around 4am. Officers had been pursuing a van prior to the collision, which then involved three other vehicles. It was confirmed that no police cars were involved in the actual crash, as the pursuit had been called off before the collision occurred.
Tragically, a woman died as a result of the crash. Police have stated that her family is receiving support from specially trained officers during this difficult time.
As is standard procedure in such cases, the incident has been referred to the IOPC for a thorough and independent investigation. Further updates will be provided as the inquiry progresses.
