Blazing Hay Fire Rages Through Orpington Fields

Fire crews are locked in a fierce battle against a vast field fire in Orpington, which has already engulfed more than three hectares of dry hay. The blaze erupted at 12:23pm on Charmwood Lane and is spreading fast.

Massive Firefighting Effort Underway

Around 25 firefighters from Orpington, Bromley, Sidcup, and Biggin Hill stations are tackling the inferno with four fire engines. The London Fire Brigade has deployed its new All-Wheel Drive (AWD) vehicle, capable of pumping 1,000 litres of water and reaching tough terrain — perfect for tackling grass fires like this one.

A Wildfire Support Officer is on hand, guiding commanders to help snuff out the flames as swiftly as possible.

Heatwave Puts Firefighters on High Alert

With soaring temperatures fuelling the fire risk, crews are stocked with extra hydration, sun cream, and protective gear to keep them safe out in the scorching conditions.

Assistant Commissioner Craig Carter urged the public to take care: “Proper rubbish disposal and making sure cigarettes are fully out are key to preventing fires like this.”

Barbecue Warnings as Summer Sizzles On

“Many Londoners want to enjoy the warm weather in parks or open spaces,” Carter said, “but we’re warning people not to bring disposable barbecues. They’re a fire hazard, especially when ground is dry.”

He also advised against using barbecues on balconies due to fire risks from nearby flammable materials. “Never leave barbecues unattended, set them on level ground away from sheds, fences, trees or tents,” he added.

Residents Urged to Keep Clear

Emergency services are focused on containing the blaze and protecting nearby homes. Locals are urged to steer clear of Charmwood Lane to allow firefighters to work without interruption.
