Psychiatrists Step Up: SAS Doctors Get Approved Clinician Training
New Role Could Revolutionise Mental Health Care
Specialty and Associate Specialist (SAS) doctors in psychiatry are being handed a game-changing opportunity. They can now train to become approved clinicians, allowing them to shoulder more responsibility and make key decisions about patient care.
This means patients will benefit from dedicated experts ready to deal directly with their needs and support them throughout treatment.
Mental Health Act Reform Sparks Demand for More Clinicians
With reforms to the Mental Health Act underway, the NHS urgently needs more approved clinicians to deliver quality care. To kick things off, a pilot scheme is offering 42 training places specifically for SAS doctors.
Professor Wendy Burn, Health Education England’s (HEE) National Mental Health Clinical Advisor, praised the move:
“I’m delighted that HEE is launching this exciting pilot to support SAS doctors to become recognised as approved clinicians. SAS doctors are an essential part of our medical workforce and this programme will improve their ability to provide good care for patients.”
Fully Funded Training with Protected Learning Time
The approved clinician course includes protected time for study and a fully-funded mental health law course, ensuring SAS doctors get the training they need without added stress.
