Traffic chaos has erupted in Newport after Staplers Road was sealed off in both directions following a major sewage main burst this afternoon.

Contractors working for Southern Water were forced to halt all work after a key sewage pipe collapsed near the Barton crossroads by Cross Lane and School Lane. The collapse has triggered a total road closure, grinding rush-hour traffic to a halt.
Raw Sewage Floods Trenches as Emergency Teams Scramble
Emergency gully suckers have been dispatched to suck up raw sewage flooding trenches dug for new water pipes. Two massive 36,000-litre tankers are pumping out hundreds of litres of sewage to stop backups into local drains and homes.
“The collapse is causing major disruption and may have occurred right in the centre of the carriageway,” said an insider.
Drivers Ignore Closure Signs, Risking More Chaos
Despite clear road closure signs at Coppins Bridge, some motorists are ignoring warnings and attempting to drive through, worsening congestion. The closure, managed by DTM, is expected to heavily impact the evening commute.

Drainage experts Dyno-rod have arrived with specialist cameras to pinpoint the exact collapse location. However, efforts are being blocked by heavy scale buildup inside the pipes. Meanwhile, sewage is reportedly backing up around Newport, affecting hundreds of homes served by the damaged 2.5 main.
