Superdrug Ditches Single-Use Vapes Across UK and Ireland
Superdrug has announced it will stop selling single-use vapes like Vuse Go and Flavaah Bars in all its stores across the UK and Ireland. The retailer plans to clear all stock by the end of the year, pulling around 1,300 disposable vapes sold weekly from shelves.
Environmental Crisis Spurs Bold Move
This decision comes amid shocking new figures from campaign group Material Focus revealing that five million disposable vapes are tossed each week in the UK—quadrupling over the past year. The growing mountain of vape waste poses a huge threat to the environment.
“The rate at which consumers are using single-use vapes and discarding them is worrying and alarming for the environment,” said Lucy Morton-Channon, Superdrug’s head of environment, social, and governance. “The lasting effects that single-use vapes are having on the environment need to be addressed, and I am pleased that we’ve decided to remove them from all stores.”
Fire Risk and Safety Concerns Add Fuel to the Fire
Superdrug also cited safety fears linked to lithium batteries in disposable vapes, which can cause fire hazards if not disposed of properly. This dual threat of environmental damage and safety risk is pushing retailers to rethink their product ranges.
Pressure Builds for Government Vape Ban
UK ministers are reportedly considering a full ban on single-use vapes amid fears these products are targeted at children and teenagers. Councils, paediatricians, and waste campaigners have long pushed for outlawing disposable vapes to protect young people and the environment.
The government is expected to respond soon to a vaping consultation that closed in June, potentially shaping the future of disposable vape sales nationwide.
Superdrug Offers Alternatives
Superdrug promises shoppers a wide variety of alternatives for quitting cigarettes or switching to other vaping options. The move aims to support health-conscious customers while tackling the vape waste crisis head-on.
