Thrilling 36-Hour Rescue Saves Three Cavers in Yorkshire Dales

Three veteran cavers have been hauled to safety after a tense 36-hour ordeal deep inside the Yorkshire Dales. Over 100 volunteers braved brutal conditions to rescue the trio before rising floodwaters could trap them for good.

Massive Rescue Operation Kicks Off After Cavers Go Missing

The Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association (UWFRA) sprang into action late Thursday when North Yorkshire Police alerted them to three overdue explorers. The group had entered the perilous Dowber Gill passage via Providence Pot, aiming to cross to Dow Cave — but didn’t return.

UWFRA described the operation as “a massive task,” rapidly calling in neighbouring caving teams to assist. Surface crews maintained contact, sending teams down both entrances. Their persistence paid off: just after 2:30am Friday, they found the trapped cavers near the intimidating 60-foot Rift.

Relentless Floodwaters Turn Rescue Into Race Against Time

When heavy rain hit, the cave’s water levels surged, blocking the easiest escape and forcing all to backtrack through the hazardous Providence Pot. Above ground, rescuers battled worsening weather and treacherous terrain, communicating through a specialised cave text system that sends messages through solid rock.

Inside the cave, teams worked gruelling shifts, hauling out the exhausted cavers as floodwaters threatened to surge. Ingenious dams and plastic sheeting were deployed to divert water at the entrance. By 3:30pm Friday, the first caver was safely rescued and rushed to medical help in Kettlewell.

Intense Rescue Wraps Up at Dawn With Three Survivors

The second caver was pulled free just after 2:30am Saturday, battered but alive. The third and final explorer, exhausted and slow to move, was rescued at 4:30am and stretchered to Hag Dyke hut for warmth before hospital transfer. UWFRA officially called off the operation at 7:45am Saturday with relief palpable among all involved.

UWFRA Salutes Brave Volunteers and Rescuers

“We want to thank all our volunteers who battled terrible conditions,” said UWFRA. “Special thanks to North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service welfare van and Hag Dyke wardens – their forward base was a lifesaver.

“We wish the cavers a speedy recovery and hope this harrowing ordeal doesn’t put them off caving!”
