Wales urged to save beloved customs with new UK heritage register
Nominate Welsh Traditions for National Recognition
Communities across Wales are being urged to put forward their most treasured traditions for a brand-new UK Register of cultural heritage. The scheme aims to officially protect and celebrate vibrant Welsh customs that shape national identity and community spirit.
From Nos Galan to Bog Snorkelling – All Traditions Welcome
Classic Welsh customs like the Nos Galan road races, 3am carol singing, and the Mari Lwyd could soon get official status. Seasonal celebrations including St David’s Day and St Dwynwen’s Day are also on the list. Not forgetting the uniquely Welsh Eisteddfodau – events packed with singing, poetry, and storytelling in Welsh.
But it’s not just the ancient that qualify. Quirky modern events such as bog snorkelling and the Elvis Festival, plus timeless favourites like male voice choirs, traditional crafts like slate-carving and love-spoon making, and baking Welsh cakes on bakestones are all in the mix.
Government Backs Cultural Safeguarding
Welsh Secretary David TC Davies stressed the importance of safeguarding these living traditions to keep Wales’ unique identity alive. This drive supports the UK Government’s plan to ratify the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, which protects crucial customs and crafts across the nation.
Arts and Heritage Minister Lord Parkinson of Whitley Bay praised the UK’s rich cultural tapestry, highlighting Welsh contributions. “By ratifying this convention, we’ll ensure these traditions get the respect they deserve and thrive for generations to come,” he said.
Public Consultation Launched – Have Your Say!
The register will be created with input from communities, groups and individuals across Wales. A public consultation has opened to discuss how the nomination process and criteria should work. Welsh communities are encouraged to join in preserving their cultural gems and help build a UK-wide inventory, set to open for nominations next year.
